Scicli - Sicilia

Sicilia is one of the most beautiful and intriguing Italian region, characterized by a fantastic history, art, and gastronomy not only for food and wine but also for sweets and pastries.

We at BBofItaly are used to consider Sicilia a region with a very strong “character” and “black and white” contrasts. Therefore a region that must be visited !

Scicli is one of the most beautiful village of the region, characterized by a baroque architecture. Strolling around Scicli is like living in a eighteenth century story when the village was completely rebuilt after a terrible earthquake.

The history of this village begins 3000 years ago with the dominion of the Siculi folk. Then it was the turn of the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, the latter during the 17th century AD.

Scicli has also been influenced by Arab culture. Therefore this village has a unique heritage that you can observer by visiting it. The downtown is concentrated in Via Francesco Mormino Penna a street of unique beauty with a small square where people meet and chat in complete relaxation.

Palazzo Beneventano – Beneventano Palace – is worth visiting also for its fantastic facade characterized by the presence of sculptures of mythological faces and characters.

Behind this palace you can admire the San Matteo church, the oldest in Scicli located on a hill. From here you can enjoy a gorgeous landscape of the village and sea. The church of San Giovanni Evangelista with its particular facade is also worth visiting.

The Chiafura neighbourhood of Scicli, is characterized by rocky caves built in the Byzantine era. Inside one of them there are still very poor furniture and by visiting it you can have a net idea of the lifestyle of people who found refuge in these caves.

Last but not least we suggest visiting the ancient pharmacy of Scicli called Cartia which dates back to July 11th 1902. You will discover an incredible museum that shows you what these types of shops looked like in those years.
