Benigni refuge - Lombardia

In prealps of Sondrio district – Lombardia region – there is a little shelter named Benigni located in a fantastic position. It is very close to the Pizzo dei Tre Signori peak (2554 meters high), surrounded by a gorgeous mountain range including the most important Pizzo di Trona (2510 meters high) and Pizzo Varrone (2325 meters high).

These mountains are not so high but they are characterized by rocky faces that make them impressive and mighty. This part of Italian prealps is worth a visit ! Benigni shelter stands on a small flat piece of land (2222 mters high) called Altipiano dei Piazzotti (plateau of Piazzotti). This particular position allows you to enjoy a fantastic view over a splendid territory.

We at BBofItaly longed for this adventure to Benigni shelter. It begins in Pescegallo, a small locality at the end of Val Gerola, a lateral valley of the main Valtellina. The path is not so long but its last part is challenging.

It starts winding in the main forest. Then you come to a sign that indicates “il sentiero dell’homo selvadego” (the path of the wild man). This path goes inside a short valley named Val Tronella.

At the end of this valley the path climbs up into a very steep and rocky gorge, characterised by the presence of huge boulders. This is the most dangerous and challenging part of the path, that must be tackled with caution. This steep and rocky gorge is mostly in shadow, for this reason it could be covered by snow and ice especially during winter and early spring.
