Passo del Notaro - Lombardia

Val Bodengo is a lateral valley of Val Chiavenna, close to the Switzerland border. This very remote valley is nothing short of extraordinary. It is a lonely and absolutely savage place.

You can walk along its paths all day long, meeting very few people, and your mobile phone will not work in that area ! In Val Bodengo there is a beautiful place not to be missed.

It is worth visiting this zone called Passo del Notaro (Notaro pass – 2098 meters of altitude), because it is located along the watershed that creates the border between Italy and Switzerland.

From this pass the landscape is gorgeous, also because here the mountains are rocky and very rough, even though they are not very high (less than 3000 meters).

The path to get the target is not difficult but it is very long. It wings along the Val Bodengo and the last fraction climbs up to the “high lands” at the head of the valley, from where you can dominate the whole territory, enjoying a wonderful view of the surroundings mountains. The highest is Pizzo Cavregasco (Cavegasco peak) 2535 meters high.

The Notaro pass is very narrow and it is located at the end of a steep and long slope. It is literally carved in the rock where the border between Switzerland and Italy is marked. From this place you can have a gorgeous view on the vertical face of Pizzo Cavregasco.

Worthy of note is the “Precipizio di Strem” (Strem precipice) present in the first part of Val Bodengo, where the path to Notaro pass begins. This precipice is a huge vertical face usually frequented by mountaineers for very difficult climbs.
