Ogliastra e Grotta del Fico

Ogliastra is a paradise of remarkable beauty located on the eastern side of Sardinia, where nature offers its best. Ogliastra is synonymous with nature: its rugged geographical characteristics slowed down the development in this area compared to the rest of Sardinia, making it still today an uncontaminated area where flora and fauna are the masters.
In the most part of Ogliastra you can admire a barren and impervious landscape that reaches the Gennargentu mountains, from which you can enjoy incredible views.
Along the coast of the Ogliastra area there are long beaches with very fine white sand, rocky inlets, caves and a variety of breathtaking landscapes to be enjoyed also with boat or raft trips.

Ogliastra is not only beaches, mountains and nature, but it is a very ancient land in geographical terms that boasts important sites of historical importance. Scattered throughout the territory, you can find anti-pirate towers (used as an important defense system of the island from the 16th to the 19th century), Nuragic sites (dating back to the Bronze Age 1800-101 BC), Domus de Janas (prehistoric tombs excavated in the rock dating back to the pre-Nuragic period), the Giants’ tombs (monuments used as collective tombs in the Nuragic age), the Menhirs (meaning “Long Stone”, they are monolithic megaliths erected during the Neolithic) and numerous rural churches.

Among the places to visit in Ogliastra, along the coast accessible only by sea, is the “Grotta del Fico“, formed by natural tunnels that go deep. Here it is possible to walk through some tunnels which are the ancient bed of an underground river. This cave is also the last refuge of the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus Monachus) who find shelter and protection inside the tunnels.
Along the way you can admire concretions (stalactites, stalagmines and columns) of different sizes and colors that sculpt the walls with curious shapes.
