Marzamemi and Sicilian food

Difficult to describe in a few lines the uniqueness of the savour of Sicilian food, but a special shout-out must be done about, so we have chosen Marzamemi a gorgeous and very characteristic corner of Sicilia to taste the food of this region.

Marzamemi is a fantastic tiny hamlet located on the seashore of Mare Ionio. It dates back to around the year 1000. In the past its inhabitants were tuna fishermen and it has also two very little harbours: one named La Fossa and the second named La Balata.

Nowadays Marzamemi has become a tourist attraction, with tiny restaurants where mainly you eat fish cooked whit special local receipts. The fish obviously is “directly from sea to dish” … a few meters that means “food at 0 km”.

Walking through this hamlet is a unique pleasure. You can spend your time in complete relaxation enjoying a wonderful landscape and environment. An experience not to be missed absolutely.

When sunset arrives, Marzamemi changes its beauty into a magical site. Lights come on in the alleys and little squares and the tiny restaurants welcome people who want to taste the fantastic Sicilian food.

We at BBofItaly have had this experience of taste not only for food but also for wine, experience enhanced by the beauty of the site.

Starting with wine. We drank a fantastic red, the very famous Nero d’Avola. Impossible to describe the unique flavour of this wine. So taste it ! But remember the original one, not a fake …

As first course we had Pasta con Gamberetti e Salvia (pasta with shrimps and sage) and Bruschette con Acciughe (a slice of toasted bread covered with a special sauce and anchovies).

As second course we had a dish with Tonno (tuna) cooked according to different kinds of local recipes, and we had another dish of Merluzzo (cod) in breadcrumbs accompanied by grilled vegetables.

You cannot leave Sicilia if you have not tasted Cuoppo, a paradisiac fried fish and vegetables ! An unforgettable experience for your palate, even enhanced if you decided to also taste the legendary Arancino made with rice, peas and Caciocavallo (a typical cheese).

Last but not least, let’s talk about desserts. Unbelievable ! Sicilia is also the dessert land. Cannolo, Granita, Cassata, Gelato or even Tuppo con Gelato … impossible to describe these sweets, a universe of unique sensations, an universe to explore !
