Levanto - Liguria

Liguria is a region located in the north–west of Italy. Its environment is characterized by tiny villages nestled along the seashore dominated by mountains sometimes with vertical faces that plunge into the water.

Due to this rough environment in the past the railway practically winded along the seashore, using also tunnels dug through the vertical rocky faces. A very bold design indeed !

Nowadays the railway has been redesigned in the hinterland, far from the seashore. But the structures of the old route are still there and after years of complete abandonment, the Luguria region has decided to refurbish them, designing a spectacular path that can be covered by bicycle or on foot.

You will thus be able to cross kilometres of spectacular environment, enjoying hamlets as Bonassola, the fantastic sea, little seashores and gorgeous mountains with breath taking cliffs. You cannot miss this experience !

The oldest part of Levano is very beautiful, with its little harbour. Here you can stroll through alleys where there are tiny shops selling handicrafts and tasty gastronomy. You can also find a wonderful church called Chiesa di Sant’Andrea.

Almost surely this church dates back to 13th century and is characterized by a beautiful façade made with rows of white marble and green Serpentinite. The very simple and essential interior of the church is an example of Romanesque architecture.
