In Marche region – Ascoli Piceno district – Grottammare lays down,. This is a village on the shore of Adriatico sea and its origins date back to the Neolithic era. Of course during the Medieval period it was ruled by powerful families and also by Papal State.

Grottammare had also a great prestige for its harbour nowadays disappeared and was also very active during the Risorgimento period, when Garibaldi and king Vittorio Emanuele II were hosted in the village.

Grottammare is surrounded by walls with battlements, built on XVI century. In these walls there are three main doors: Porta Marina close to Torrione della Battaglia (read here below), Porta Castello the oldest main door and Porta Maggiore the most important door.

On the highest part of Grottammare there are also the ruins of a castle. It seems its origins date back to XI century. During the years 1640 – 1643 the castle was refurbished and reinforced.

The castle also had a tower mainly used as lighthouse, then demolished because it was unsafe. Embedded within the walls encompassing the village, stands the Torrione della Battaglia, an imposing tower that nowadays hosts a museum.
