Grande Rochere - Valle d'Aosta

Are you looking for a challenging hike ? Don’t miss Grande Rochere ! This a 3328 meters high mountain located on the border of Vallone di Planaval, Vallone del Malatrà and Vallone de Chambave in Valle d’Aosta region.

First part of the path winds along Vallone di Planaval, a fantastic side little valley that converges into the main Valle d’Aosta. The car must be parked close to Planval hamlet, where the path begins and stretches along the Vallone overcoming a considerable jump to the awesome last upper part.

This upper part is covered with green meadows encompassed by high peaks such as: Grande Rochere (3328 meters high – our goal), Piccola Rochere (3226 meters high), unbelievable Aiguille de Bonalex (3201 meters high), Auguille de Malatrà (3141 meters high), Grand Creton (3071 meters high), Aiguille d’Artanavaz (3069 meters high), Costone di Mezzodì (2945 meters high). Among them Aiguille de Bonalex must be highlighted for its fantastic shape: a monolithic huge sloping triangle !

At this point crossing the meadows the foot of Grande Rochere has to be reached. From here the path disappears and more or less you have to be overcome 1000 meters of altitude to get the top. So not an easy task !

Some few traces and some Ometti (little signs made with rocks positioned one upon the other) can help you to find out the right direction. But anyway you must go up aiming to the top on a very difficult, steep and slippery ground done by gravel and rocks. You practically go straight up to the top !

At the end after a big effort, you get the top of Grande Rochere where the landscape is gorgeous. Practically you have a view on all mountains four thousand meters high present on the border between France and French Switzerland. Unbelievable !

But of course a lot of attention must also be paid during the descent, until meadows of Vallone di Planaval have been reached.
