Gastronomy of Merano - Alto Adige

Merano is a little city in Bolzano district nestled in Alto Adige. The gastronomic traditions of this Italian area are very important and their origins come from very basic foods, mainly from mountains, but strongly enhanced by a fantastic local expertise.

Well known is Speck, a special kind of smoked cured meat, but also spiced with rosemary, bay leaf, juniper, salt and pepper.

Local and in some cases spiced cheeses are largely used also in Canederli recipes, a first course characterized basically by balls of bread mixed up with eggs, Speck, onions, and other kinds of more specific ingredients.

Herbs like chervil, thyme and chives, are largely used in several local dishes, to enhance the gastronomy of Merano. Of course meat is widely used and cooked with different recipes. Soups are also very famous as a first course, especially the one with barley.

Of course beer in Merano is fantastic, but the wine, especially the white one, is also very special. For example Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Kerner.

Last but not least are special sweets and fantastic cakes done in Merano, with an incredible very high thickness !

Here below pictures of some typical Merano dishes:

Arrosto di Maiale con erba cipollina e contorno – Roast pork with chives and side dish

Pane con semi di finocchio, formaggio e Speck – Bread with fennel seeds, cheese and Speck
