Gastronomy of Merano - Alto Adige
Merano is a little town in the Bolzano district – Alto Adige. The gastronomic traditions of this area of Italy are very important and their origins come from very basic foods, mainly from the mountains, but strongly enhanced by a fantastic local artisan wisdom.
Speck is very well-known and is a particular type of smoked meat spiced with rosemary, bay leaves, juniper, salt and pepper.
Local cheeses, sometimes spiced, are also widely used in the recipe for Canederli, a first course essentially characterized by balls of bread mixed with eggs, Speck, onions, and other more particular ingredients.
Herbs such as chervil, thyme and chives, are widely used in various local dishes, to enrich the Merano gastronomy. Of course, meat is used and cooked in various recipes. Soups are also very popular as a first course, especially barley soup.
Of course, the beer in Merano is great, but the wine, especially the white wine, is really special. For example, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Kerner.
And last but not least, there are special desserts and fantastic cakes made in Merano, with an incredibly high thickness!
