Cervo - Liguria

In Imperia district – Liguria region – lies a wonderful hamlet named Cervo. It is one of the most beautiful hamlet in Italy and is located on the hill named Cervo (324 meters high) and on the one named Castellareto (211 meters high).

Furthermore the hamlet overlooks a gorgeous blue sea that can be admired from the small square in front of the church – Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista – located close to the highest part of the hamlet.

First evidences of the existence of Cervo date back to the prehistoric era, after which it was conquered by the Roman army during the century 181 B.C. due to its strategic position and the presence of some water springs.

During the year 1204 Cervo declared itself a free district, and it was ruled by the republic of Genova. The Inhabitants of Cervo and those of the city of Genova became strong allies.

After the French dominion, in the 1815 year the hamlet came under the control of the Kingdom of Sardegna. The historical part of Cervo (the highest one) has been refurbished over the years, and is now in an excellent state of preservation.

As mentioned above in the oldest part of the hamlet there is a wonderful square. From here you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the blue sea. The church of San Giovanni Battista also stands in this square. This building dates back to the late of XVII century and the early of XVIII century.

Going up to the highest part of Cervo you will find Castello di Clavesana. Originally this building was a church but during XIII century it was transformed into a little castle where nowadays there is a museum illustrating the traditions of Cervo.
