Castello Aragonese - Ortona Abruzzo

In Chieti district – Abruzzo region – lies a wonderful little town named Ortona, overlooking the see and characterized by the presence of a fantastic fortress called Castello Aragonese (Aragonese Castle).

First evidences of town date back to the Italic era, after which it was conquered by the Roman army during I century BC. In the Middle Age Ortona was dominated by several populations and powerful families.

The town is also characterised by the presence of the most important harbour in the Abruzzo region. It dates back to the Italic era, before the Roman dominion and it has always been the main driving force of Ortona’s economy.

During the XV century, the town was ruled by the Aragonese monarchy and in this period the harbour was refurbished, but also Aragonese Castle was built. The location of this fortress is fantastic because it overlooks the sea.

Arogonese Castle was used for defensive purposes until XVII century, when it was purchased by Baglioni family and converted into a private residence. During the Second World War the fortress was hit by German bombs and all its internal parts with the highest defensive walls were destroyed. The remains of the building were completely refurbished during the year 2001 and nowadays Aragonese Castle can be visited.

Here below you can see some pictures about the Aragonese Castle.
