Bominaco - Abruzzo
In Abruzzo region – L’Aquila district – there is a hamlet called Bominaco. It is very tiny, so it might be you have to look it up, but when you discover it you will also find a Medieval treasure.
Bominaco is characterized by the presence of the Oratorio di San Pellegrino (San Pellegrino oratory) and the fortress of the hamlet located on the top of a nearby hill named Boria. This last one is easily reachable by foot and it allows you to enjoy a beautiful landscape of the surrounding environment.
It seems that the San Pellegrino oratory dates back to the year 1263 by will of Teodino abbot. The building stands on the grave of the Saint from whom it takes its name and a monastery was built around it.
The interior of this little church has a very simple structure from an architectural point of view, but walls and ceilings are completely covered with very rare and precious frescoes. These frescoes describe the life of Jesus Christ, the Last Judgment and the life of San Pellegrino, something really gorgeous and unique !
As previously mentioned, the fortress of Bominaco was built on the top of a hill overlooking the Navelli plateau with a wonderful view of its surrounding mountains. It dates back to the XII century, but in the year 1423 this first structure was destroyed by Captain Braccio da Montone. Then, by will of Pope Martino V, a simple defensive structure was built, also used for sighting purposes.
