Barrea

In the Aquila’s district, Abruzzo region, there is a fantastic hamlet called Barrea overlooking an artificial lake – a dam. The latter takes the same name of the hamlet itself.

This hamlet is embedded in a gorgeous mountain territory and its origins date back to the prehistoric era. It seems that this area of Abruzzo region was populated by hunters who chase wild animals present in the huge forests and searched material to build their primitive weapons.

Of course after this first period, Barrea was conquered by Roman army and its inhabitants were dedicated to livestock farming, moving their herds toward fertile pastures, but the hamlet nowadays visible dates back to year 1017.

On the highest part of Barrea there is the castle, built in the Medieval period and mainly used to control the territory. Over time it had been partially destroyed by several earthquakes.

It was refurbished during year 1812, and then sold to Di Loreto family who donated it to the city administration on year 2006. From the towers and walls of the castle, you can enjoy a gorgeous landscape on the lake and the surrounding environment characterized by the presence of Sangro river gulley.
