Avigliana

Avigliana - Piemonte

Located at the natural gateway to the Val di Susa, Avigliana is a fantastic village in Torino district – Piemonte region. The position of this village is strategic because it is on one of the main roads to the French border which runs through Val di Susa.

Avigliana is encompassed by a natural park called Parco naturale dei laghi di Avigliana, in which there are two wonderful lakes. The origins of the village date back to prehistoric era, but first small settlement was born in 595 B.C..

During the Middle Ages the village had its first defensive walls. On the top of Pezzulano mountain there is the Avigliana castle now ruined. The origins of this castle date back to the year 924. From this site you can enjoy a wonderful landscape of the two lakes and the natural gateway to the Val di Susa.

The area of Avigliana is also characterized by the Sacra di San Michele. An astonishing cathedral located on the top of Pirchiriano mountain. Its origins date back to the end of the year 900 and it is literally built on huge rocks.

The whole building has severe architecture and also the inside of the church is unbelievable. But we don’t want to tell you more because we would like to dedicate a specific space to the Sacra di San Michele within BBofItaly.
