Ascoli Piceno - Marche
Located in Marche region, Ascoli Piceno is a small city characterized by a particular beauty due to its amazing churches and monuments. The first evidences of this city date back to the prehistoric era and therefore they are shrouded in mystery.
The downtown of Ascoli Piceno is characterized by an amazing square, named Piazza del Popolo. This square has a Renaissance style and it is dominated by Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo with its tall tower and by Chiesa di San Francesco.
The crypt of cathedral of Ascoli Piceno deserves attention for its beauty. It is named Cripta di Sant’Emidio and it dates back to the XI century. The crypt was built to host the body of Sant’Emidio.
The Battistero di San Giovanni is also worth a visit because it represents the Romanesque style that characterized much of Ascoli Piceno. It is difficult to establish the date of the first evidences of this building because it was built as a pagan temple.
Last but not least, don’t miss a visit to the garden of Palazzo Arengo, a beautiful corner of Ascoli Piceno. This palace was built during the end of XII century and it is located next to the Municipality palace.
If you have the opportunity to spend your time strolling around Ascoli Piceno, you cannot miss tasting the very famous Olive Ascolane made by Olives stuffed with different types of meat (chicken, pig, and cow) and fried with breadcrumbs.
