Arquà Petrarca

Arquà Petrarca - Veneto

In a wonderful area of the Veneto region (north-east of Italy), there is Arquà Petrarca, a village preserved as it was during the XIV century. It is also famous, because in a wonderful house – a little palace – it hosted the well-known poet Francesco Petrarca.

The two major and most interesting buildings to visit are Petrarca’s palace, where the poet spent the last part of his life, and the church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The main altar of the church dates back to the period 1700,  while the two wooden laterals date back to the period 1500. During some renovation works in the early 1900s some frescoes came to light. Furthermore the funeral of Petrarca took place in this church.

Regarding Petrarca’s palace, we can say that the poet spent the last period of his life here from the year 1369 and he personally took care of the renovation of the building. This last one is characterized by the presence of the poet’s rooms on the lower floors while the upper ones were used by servants.

After Petrarca’s death the structure of the building was renovated, also adding some fantastic frescoes on the walls of the rooms. The palace became the destination of several pilgrims who wanted to visit the place where the famous poet spent the last years of his life.

In any case it is a pleasure walking through the alleys of the hamlet, because you can immerse yourself in a fantastic Italian era, full of history and art, but also because you can enjoy a wonderful and relaxing environment.
