Abbazia di Pomposa - Emilia Romagna
Abbazia di Pomposa is located in the district of Ferrara, a city in the Emilia Romagna region. The first evidence of this religious building dates back to the IX century. At that time Abbazia di Pomposa was completely sorrounded by Fiume Po, the largest and most important Italian river which still flows very close to the building today.
The two main parts of Abbazia di Pomposa are Chiesa di Santa Maria and its bell tower, the particular construction of the religious building dates back to the year 1063.
Inside the church there are several frescoes, mostly dating back to the year 1300. Some fantastic mosaici are also still present on the floors of Chiesa di Santa Maria, made mainly between the XI and XII centuries.
To the side of the church the Chiostro is still present and around it also the whole building used in the past by monks for their daily life, such as Refettorio, Aula Capitolo, Aula delle Stilate.
However, the most particular thing to underline about Abbazia di Pomposa is the atmosphere of the environment in which the building is immersed, a small world that reveals a deep feeling of peace!
